Sanjay Singhal is a Canadian entrepreneur, author, and enthusiastic character in a world that he now suspects is a very elaborate holographic simulation. He founded Audiobooks.com back when people still thought downloading MP3s was futuristic, sold it, did a victory lap through venture capital as General Partner at 500 Startups Canada, and then wandered into the hospitality business for reasons that still aren’t clear.
After opening a successful bar called Coffee Oysters Champagne, he launched the Nikean Foundation to fund psychedelic research and support mental health solutions not designed by 19th-century pharmaceutical companies.
He also wrote Zero to Tesla, a memoir about losing money, making money, and realizing that neither has much to do with actual joy. These days, he’s working on something weirder: a loose collection of essays called The Book of the Uncult.
It’s not a cult.
The Book of the Uncult is a fictional-ish, parable-laced, philosophy-adjacent guide to seeing through the whole production we call life. Think: Zen koans rewritten by someone who used to own a McLaren.
It teaches that your thoughts are unreliable, your goals are fictional, and your deepest peace might begin the moment you stop trying to be a better version of a character you didn’t write.
It’s really not a cult.
He lives in Toronto with his wife, three children, and two dogs, none of whom are impressed by his accomplishments.
